The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
