Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
